Te Whare Tiaki Kaumātua Support Services provides a Cultural Elder Abuse Response Service for kaumātua, kuia and older people living in the Porirua, Kapiti Coast, and nearby Wellington areas (from Newlands and Johnsonville, through to Pukerua Bay).

This service is additional to the wider Elder Abuse Response Service and is focused on cultural support, including for people who identify as Māori, Pasifika, Asian, and other Ethnic communities such as Indian, Middle Eastern, Latin American and African. We aim to ensure our kaumātua, kuia, and all older people are respected, valued, and safe within their wider whānau (family).

How We Can Help

Our dedicated team provides support, information, and advocacy, working with elders and their whānau to create sustainable safety. This support is free and may include:

  • Improving financial protection.

  • Providing access to legal support.

  • Helping to resolve family conflict.

  • Organising respite care (short-term accommodation).

  • Arranging new accommodation.

Who can get support

Any older person who identifies from the cultural groups we cover and lives in the Porirua, Kapiti Coast, or wider Porirua region can seek help from our team.

An older person can contact us themselves, or a whānau member, friend, neighbour, or health professional can contact us on their behalf.
